Kansas City, MissouriIn 2017, the City of Kansas City, Missouri Department of Neighborhood and Housing services placed a request for proposals in providing single-family housing in several Targeted Redevelopment Neighborhoods.
The proposal’s intent was to encourage investment on available vacant lots and to promote owner-occupancy in the City’s neighborhoods. To maintain the rich architectural fabric throughout the City, the proposed designs were to respond to the form and scale, as well as integrate modern sustainable home features. The services required in the proposal included architectural/engineering design services, construction observation, and facilitation assistance.
In response, DRAW developed five conceptual designs – three single family homes, one duplex home, and one 4-plex.
These designs reference elements of the existing housing stock, including large front porches, complimentary materials, and historic building forms. These conceptual designs were presented at Marlborough and Key Coalition neighborhood meetings and the design team responded to suggestions for refinements. The Department approved three of DRAW’s designs for construction documentation, to be eventually made available for purchase.
