This contemporary farm house located in rural Kansas outside of Kansas City is the retreat for DRAW’s interior design collaborator, Connie Drees, and her husband, Brad Drees. The concept of the home’s form was to transition an iconic farm house (two story gable) to a vaulted single story space through a modern insert, referencing what we define as an updated vernacular. The home feels very much at home in its landscape, but is simultaneously clearly of its time.
The process was rather unconventional. Beginning as a renovation, the project shifted to new construction when the owner changed building site locations. Happy with the direction the design was taking, however, the owner wanted to keep the initial footprint of the original design and build new based on this design and footprint. Pulling from inspiration of the surrounding farm houses and barns, the building has an open and light-filled interior.
