While maintaining many existing uses, the WCRP proposes LEED Platinum buildings and landscapes in the 26 townhouses, 40 multifamily residential units. The site also includes various new shared community amenities such as parks, community gardens, a living machine for wastewater treatment, and a shared heating system fueled with the Tribe’s biomass waste. The WCRP fuses the Spokane Tribe’s traditional, cultural values and architectural needs into a locale-specific solution implemented in phases. The WCRP was the core document used by the Tribe as they applied for (and received) Federal Promise Zone Designation. One of only 22 Promise Zones in the country, the designation increases the Tribe’s funding preference within the Federal system. It acknowledges the Tribe’s vision of building a 21st-century nation rooted in sustainable, traditional practices. Melanie worked with the Tribe to gain Federal funding to implement the Wellpinit Education Campus infrastructure, north of the Wellpinit Core.
